At the dawn of December 19, 2023, Dr. Maher Al -Qadi woke up early to perform the obligatory prayer, then quickly lost his e -mail to be surprised by Saeed’s news: obtaining a global prize.
Maher – Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) – won the youth researchers award presented by the “Energy Sturg Materes'”.
The patrol offers this award annually to three young researchers who raised the field of energy storage with their distinguished studies, and contributed to its great contribution. The judge is the first Egyptian Arab researcher to receive this award, and the award is expected to be officially received during the first quarter of 2024.
From Cairo to Los Angeles
Serendipity plays various roles in life, and this coincidence is often ‘better than a thousand times’.
The judge graduated from the Faculty of Science at Cairo University, and during the Master’s years the young researcher worked to prepare “conductive polymers”, which are plastic materials that are characterized by their ability to deliver electricity, so they are used to developing various vital sensors. The discovery of these polymers won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000.
Just as the researchers developed the polymers connected by chance as a result of an unintended mistake during the conduct of chemical experiments, the coincidence prompted the judge to meet Richard Kenner – a professor at the Department of Materials and Engineering at the University of California – via a video conference, which prompted the young researcher to stabilize in the United States American since 2009 for doctoral research at Professor Kenner.
After a while, the judge realized that the field of conductive polymers – despite its great importance – no longer has many discoveries in his possession, and the researchers presented in his field several studies, until the coincidence played a new role.
Graphine .. the miracle material
Studies conducted by the research laboratory that Marwan Al -Qadi enrolled included work to develop very hard materials, which prompted him to see several research papers in this field.
Perhaps the most prominent studies seen by the judge were entitled “The Rise of Graphene”. On this paper, the judge told Al -Jazeera Net: ‘This paper has changed my research direction. It helped me discover a substance that we have not yet known about many details.
Graphine is a substance consisting of a monolithic layer of carbon, and extracted from graphite, which includes several layers of graphin. The most famous graphite uses include lead pencils.
Graphine has several ingredients that prompted scientists to call it ‘miracle material’, including: connecting electricity efficiently that exceeds all known connected materials, a very small, and its durability exceeds steel, along with its ability to store energy.
Here, the judge decided to invest most of his time and studies in developing the use of this distinctive material in order to exploit it in the manufacture of energy storage batteries and develop them, so he conducted several studies that emerged from them two studies that achieved a significant impact in the field of material science.
Graphine has – as we have indicated – unlimited features, but it is a substance that is difficult to produce at the large industrial level, and the researchers are satisfied with preparing it laboratory in small quantities.
The judge says: ‘We realized the possibility of using gravin in making a new generation of highly efficient batteries, but the matter required the development of a simple and fast way to prepare this substance in abundant quantities, which I have achieved.’
In March 2012, Marwan Al -Qadi published a research paper in the “Science ‘periodic that introduces a new way to produce gravin parts capable of storing the energy called” super condes “.
The judge explains: ‘The researchers produced the graphic laboratory by using the adhesive tape technology, and it means placing an adhesive tape on the multi -layer graphite, then removing this tape to take a thin layer of graphin at a time, which is a slow way that is not suitable for use in the field of industry.’
“We have developed a new way to get graffine that included the use of the laser in DVDs to write on graphite and then extract the thin graffine layer.”
In February 2013, the judge published a study in the journal “Nature Communichens” on how to exploit the previous technology in the production of high -precision capacitors that can store energy and consume it in very small devices, as is the case in the vital sensors connected to the body.
Mixing study and industry. The secret of excellence
The judge was not satisfied with academic work, but was keen to transform his research studies into a tangible reality. In addition to his work as an assistant professor, the judge assumed the position of head of science and technology at the American company ‘Nanotic Energy’, who is also a founding member of this company.
The judge comments: ‘I believe that one of the important factors that led to my obtaining this award is to mix research and industry, as this is an important relative feature that helps the researcher apply his studies and achieve the desired benefit in the ground.
Nanotic Energy works to develop different types of graphics -based batteries, and the young researcher hopes to bring the first products of this company to light during the second half of the current year.
The judge says: ‘Because graffine is one of the super connections, and from very hard and flexible materials at the same time, we try to use this material in manufacturing super batteries that can operate various devices and sectors … Graphine batteries are suitable for operating the major information centers such as Amazon, as Supporting electrical networks of various sizes with a fixed card, in addition to the operation of various electronic devices such as mobile and electrical bikes.
The award confirms the right path
The judge affirmed that the award is only ‘appreciation for his scientific contribution’, and a ‘indication of his path in the right direction’, which provides him with a huge incentive towards making more efforts to enrich material science, which is the field prepared by one of the most important scientific fields.
He says: ‘I think that the specialization of material science calls for great attention from researchers and scientific institutions. Progress in this dangerous field determines the extent of countries’ economically dominance – and perhaps political – over the rest of the world. ”
Regarding the possibility of including the energy storage batteries industry within the borders of our Arab homeland, the judge explains that the localization of this industry ‘is not impossible, but it calls for a strong government will and the mechanisms of implementation of a court, while providing the necessary logistical support for this type of industry.
The judge praised Morocco’s endeavor to settle the manufacture of electric car batteries, and considered that it is the country that seeks to lead in the global electric car production market.
He ends his speech by saying: ‘I hope that the Arab countries will seek a strong infrastructure that allows the manufacture of batteries in the future, so we all know that the entire world is heading towards generating clean energy and storing it, which will magnify the size of the battery industry market.’
