Russian President Vladimir Putin said today Tuesday that the military escalation and recent developments between Israel and Hamas have shown the failure of the United States policy in the Middle East, considering the establishment of an independent Palestinian state a necessity to end the conflict.
During a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who is visiting Russia, Putin accused Washington of monopolizing attempts to reach a settlement in the region without taking into account acceptable solutions for the Palestinians and Israelis, in his words.
The Russian president added that Washington promoted its own ideas about how to reach political solutions in the region, and pressured both sides, without regard for the fundamental interests of the Palestinian people.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also stated on Monday that establishing a Palestinian state is the most reliable way to find a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in his description.
The Kremlin had earlier said it was in contact with the Palestinian and Israeli authorities in an attempt to play a role in resolving the conflict between them, as Russia in recent years has maintained good relations with both sides as part of its quest to be an important regional player.
According to a representative for the Kremlin, Russian President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to visit soon.
It is worth mentioning that the Iraqi Prime Minister was meeting with Putin for the first time to discuss Iraqi-Russian cooperation and the situation in the Middle East.
