UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said today, Friday, that the situation in Gaza has deteriorated to an unprecedented dangerous level, stressing the need to open a humanitarian corridor to deliver aid to the residents of the Strip.
Guterres added that he is in continuous contact with leaders in the region to focus on ways to alleviate the suffering, with a focus on preventing further dangerous escalation in the West Bank and southern Lebanon.
Guterres – before a Security Council meeting on the escalation between Israel and Gaza – emphasized that “even wars have rules” and international humanitarian law must be respected and civilians protected.
The UN Secretary-General added that the health system in Gaza is on the verge of collapse, morgues are overcrowded, in addition to the water crisis, noting that humanitarian aid must enter all parts of Gaza immediately so they can deliver fuel, food and water to all
